{"id":157,"date":"2020-11-29T23:22:18","date_gmt":"2020-11-29T23:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alisonmccallum.ca\/?p=157"},"modified":"2022-01-02T21:47:33","modified_gmt":"2022-01-02T21:47:33","slug":"a-career-or-a-frontier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alisonmccallum.ca\/?p=157","title":{"rendered":"A Career or a Frontier?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I listened to <a href=\"https:\/\/samharris.org\/subscriber-extras\/waking-up-course-identity-conversation\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/samharris.org\/subscriber-extras\/waking-up-course-identity-conversation\/\">a conversation between Sam Harris and David Whyte<\/a> that ambled through all manner of interesting thoughts about identity, but the question that sticks with me is whether I think of my work as a career or a frontier.  Is it a destination that can be achieved, or is it a frontier where something is always just out of reach, intentionally beyond my grasp so that I can keep striving to be even better, more satisfied?<br><br>When clients talk about feeling unsure of their next move, I know they are experiencing that moment as a frontier (and perhaps are staring into an abyss!) but I wonder if it might be helpful to consider all work as being in that state, whether or not we are preparing for a transition. Not the abyss, but rather the edge of something grand and unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As someone who recently made a big leap into the unknown, I can certainly attest to the fact that it feels like an unexplored frontier most days, and that is exhilarating.
